Alice Lloyd softball earns split with Brescia University
Pippa Passes, KY: On March 29th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team hosted the Brescia Lady Bearcats in a twin bill. The home team made a solid effort to earn the split for the day. Alice Lloyd's record now sits at 14-16 (3-11 RSC), while BU moves to 2-14 (3-20 RSC).
Game 1
Alice Lloyd-4; BU-5
Brescia broke a tie game in the final inning to take the opener.
In the first inning, the visitors would take advantage of a pair of Lady Eagle errors to jump ahead, 2-0. This would prove big.
ALC would produce their own pair of runs in the bottom of that inning when Maleigh McDaniel (P) lined a single, then watched Aspyn Braham (3B) drive a blast over the left field fence to knot the score at 2-2.
The hosts would add to their advantage in the second. Ashley Wells (DP) led off with a single, then scored on a double from Chloe Taylor (2b). She then raced home when Aubree Laster (LF) lined a single to left. Now, the Bluegrass ladies led 4-2.
The Owensboro club would manage to tie the contest in the third with a double and fielder's choice, delivering the runs to make the score 4-4.
Nothing changed until the final inning. In the seventh, BU opened with a trio of singles to load the bases. A one-out fly ball delivered a score, but the last two batters struck out.
Now, down to their last chance, the blue and white got a glimmer of encouragement when Ellie Keene (C) singled with one away to place the tying run on base. Unfortunately, the next two batters went down in succession to hand the victory to the Bearcats.
For the Lady Eagles, who registered 6 hits, Branham led the club with 2 RBI's.
McDaniel started and took the tough loss on the mound. She allowed 9 hits and 3 earned runs with 0 walks and 6 strikeouts.
Brescia had 9 hits on the day. The Lady Eagles undermined themselves with the only 3 errors committed.
Alice Lloyd-9; BU-1
ALC bounced back from the first game disappointment to dominate game two in six innings behind solid pitching from Kirsten Vice.
The Lady Eagles struck in the second when Carlee Muncy (1B) galloped home following an error by the Bearcats (1-0).
In the next inning, after Keene singled, McDaniel, Muncy, and Vice blasted triples in succession. Suddenly, the Caney Creek crew led 4-0, increasing that in the fourth.
After a pair of Lady Eagles reached base in the big inning, Keene brought them both home with a line-drive single (6-0). Then, in a gift to the mountain club, a fielder's choice and a wild pitch from the guests permitted another pair of runners to race home. Just like that, Alice Lloyd held an 8-0 cushion.
The Bearcats got their lone run in the fifth when a single delivered the runner home (8-1). Happily for the Caney Creek fans, the home team would end things in the sixth.
In their final at-bat, with a runner on second, Muncy unloaded another double to produce the score that ended the contest, 9-1.
For the Eagles, McDaniel and Muncy both came through with 3-4 batting. Muncy had a pair of doubles and 3 RBIs, while Keene drove in a pair of runs herself.
On the mound, Vice was impressive once more. The freshman went the distance, allowing only 1 run and 7 hits. She struck out 1 and walked 2.
The victorious ladies would win the hitting battle 11-7 and swipe 3 bases. Tech committed 3 errors.
