
Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles Basketball earns victory over Welch
Pippa Passes,KY: On Monday, December 16th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles hosted the Welch College Lady Flames in NCCAA action. The hosts got off to a great start, but were forced to hold on before pulling out the 88-85 win.
In the opening period, sparked by a combined 15 points from sophomore forward Jamie Cowan and freshman guard Bailey Stewart ALC came out red-hot This enabled the Ketucky ladies to race out to a 29-13 lead after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the Lady Flames began to chip away at the deficit and produced a big 27 point quarter. ALC would stilll take a 50-40 advantage into dressing room at intermission.
In the third period, the Pippa Passes crew fought to hold their cushion, but led by the one-two punch of Karilyn Wieting and Keonna Chumbley, the Tennessee squad cut the score to 67-60 entering the final quarter of play.
In the fourth stanza, Alice Lloyd received a pair of huge trifectas from sophomore guard Kennedy Harvel, and this would be enough to help the blue and white hang on until the final buzzer sounded.
For Alice Lloyd (5-8), four players would hit double-digits. They were led by Cowan who drained 10-19 attempts to finish with 23 points. She added 6 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Harvel bagged 4-9 bombs to finish with 19 points. Stewart was solid as she produced 16 points, and led the team with 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Freshman guard Elivia Moore hit 3-6 bombs to deliver 11 points. She added 6 rebounds.
In addition, junior guard Aziah Campbell handed off 10 big assists and freshman forward Kaison Ward grabbed 7 rebounds of her own.
The Caney Club finished shooting 40.5% (34-84) from the field and 36.7% (11-30) from long range. They connected on 52.9% (9-17) from the foul line while adding 45 rebounds, 22 assists, and 14 steals.
Wieting and Chumbley paced WC (3-12) with 24 points apiece. Their squad finished shooting 48.4% (30-62) from the field, 30.8% (8-26) from behind the arc, and 77.3% (17-22) from the charity stripe. They also added 46 rebounds, 19 assists,and 6 steals.
The Lady Eagles return home on December 20th to face the Campbellsville Harrodsburg Pioneers. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
