During his career, he quickly proved his versatility. He was a rare, three-position player who pitched as well as playing second and third base. As a three-year starter, his greatest asset was his pitching where he performed as a key member of the relief squad. He was the recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award after his first season and would be named to the Academic All-Conference Team in the Appalachian Athletic Conference as a sophomore. His junior and senior seasons would see him chosen as an Academic All-Conference selection in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He finished his career as one of the team captains due to his leadership and solid play.
David was accompanied by his parents, David and Faye Hatfield, his sister, Ruth Stafford, brother-in-law, Richard Stafford, nephew Austin Stafford, and his niece, Keirston Stafford.
David was also a solid student, who performed well in the classroom. Furthermore, he served off the field as a Resident Advisor and was chosen as the Resident Advisor of the Year. Due to his knowledge and dedication of the game, he was appointed to the Eagles coaching staff and is now entering his 14th season as the head assistant coach. Currently, he resides in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, and is employed by Alice Lloyd College where he has served his community as a member of the Student Services Department and Athletic Department for the past 14 years.
