
Alice Lloyd Baseball Eagles Host West Virginia Tech in River States Conference Play
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles baseball team returned home on March 9th-10th to host the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears in River States Conference play. The three-game series would be played under cold and blustery conditions, and the Golden Bears would earn the sweep.
March 9, 2023
GAME 1
Alice Lloyd-4; WV Tech-20
In the series opener, WVT jumped out to a solid lead with a huge second inning and pulled away for the win.
The visitors struck with a run in the first on a single to center (1-0). However, this was just a preview of what was to come.
In the second, a two-run blast would get the ball rolling (3-0), before 3 singles, a double, and 2 costly errors would lead to a windfall of 8 more runs. When Tech finally ended the at-bat, they held a huge 11-0 advantage.
The score remained unchanged until the fourth when the Bears plated 3 more runs (14-0). The hosts would finally answer in the bottom of the inning.
In that at-bat, Cole Bishop (DH) would smack a single to bring home a run (14-1). In the very next inning, Noah Dingess (1B) would repeat the process to bring another run in (14-2). However, WVT would answer big once more.
Any hopes of an Eagle comeback were thwarted in the top of the sixth when Tech uncorked three long homers to drive in six big runs. (20-2).
ALC did score twice in their final at-bat on a two-run single courtesy of Ryan Cozart (SS), but it was much to-little-to- late
The hosts registered 7 hits on the day, with Bishop going 2-3. Cozart had 2 RBI's.
On the mound, Chase Conley started and had an uncharacteristic rough day. He lasted 1.1 innings, allowing 9 hits and 9 earned runs. He was relieved by Matthew Hebar, who gave up 3 runs, and Jacob Lovell, who allowed 6 more. Brady Carrico did throw the last inning and give up 0 runs. The trio combined to strike out just 2 batters.
The victors were on fire all day, producing 24 hits and 4 homeruns. ALC committed 3 errors compared to Tech's 0.

GAME 2
Alice Lloyd-2; WV Tech-7
The Mountaineer squad got a big first inning and made it stand up to take the contest.
Tech scored 6 huge runs to open the game, fueled by 4 well-timed singles (6-0). Pitching then controlled the game for the next five innings.
In the top of the sixth, WVT added a single run with a blast over the center field wall. The visitors now led 6-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, ALC attempted a rally. First, Cannon Ferrell (CF) singled. That was later followed up by a hit from Ryan Cozart (SS). A few batters later, Isaiah Beckett (1B) lined a hit, driving in both (7-2). Unfortunately, the inning would end with no other Eagles able to score. The Golden Bears would then put the contest away in the final inning to earn the win.
Alice Lloyd racked up 6 hits on the day compared to West Virginia's 11. All of their hits were singles, and Beckett had the club's only RBI's.
Dawson Beckett started the game for ALC and took the loss. He went 7.1 innings, allowing 7 runs on 11 hits. He settled down and pitched well after the initial inning. He whiffed 4 batters. Trenton Williams pitched the last 1.2 innings and allowed no hits.
Both clubs played error-free ball.
Game 3
Alice Lloyd-1; WV Tech- 14
The Golden Bears took the final contest to earn the series sweep.
The game was scoreless until the third. In that inning, WVT plated 2, aided by a single and fielder's choice (2-0). One inning later, a single, double, and homer brought in 4 more (6-0).
ALC scored their lone run in the bottom half of the inning when TJay Mullins (LF) singled. He would later score on Caleb Horton's (2B) single (6-1).
The visitors would then produce 4 runs in each of the final two innings (14-1). A double and several singles fueled the output. Tech would then close the contest out in the bottom of the seventh.
Alice Lloyd was outhit 13-5 with 5 singles. Horton had the lone RBI.
Will Gladson started on the mound and went 4 innings in suffering the loss. He allowed 7 hits, and 5 earned runs while striking out 1 batter. Peyton Branham went 3 innings, allowing 3 hits and 4 runs. Alex Acey tossed the last inning, giving up 3 hits and 4 runs.
The victors committed 2 errors of the day, compared to the Eagles 4.
