Alice Lloyd College Baseball opens 2025 season with sweep over Rio Grande University
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles baseball team opened the 2025 season on their beautiful multi-sport field against a solid Rio Grande University Red Storm (OH) squad. The Eagles started the campaign on the right foot, performing well in both contests, to earn the impressive sweep.
February 5th
Game 1
Alice Lloyd: 6 - Rio Grande: 2
Alice Lloyd opened the game on a positive note as they scored in the second inning. In that at-bat, left fielder Jayden Huff unloaded on a fastball and drove it over the right-center field fence for a 1-0 lead. Later, a second run would score to make the lead 2-0.
Then, in the third, with two men on, second baseman Challen Massengill lined a shot to left and sprinted around the bases for a rare inside-the-park homer (4-0). Later, an additional runner would cross the plate to make it 5-0.
Finally, in the fourth, an insurance run would cross home on a sacrifice fly. The hosts now led, 6-0.
Rio would add a single score in the sixth and another in the seventh to get within 6-2.
Happily for the home fans, Pippa Passes pitching would slam the door shut to seal the deal and lock up the win.
Dawson Beckett started on the mound for ALC and took the win. He allowed 0 runs on just 1 hit in 3.0 innings of work. He stuck out 3. Colton Lovelace and Cain Flynn both pitched well in relief, combining for 5 hits and 2 runs in four innings of action.
At the plate, Huff and Massengill provided the big home runs. In addition, Huff, Tate, and Caleb Justice all recorded 2 hits.
The visitors were outhit by the Eagles 11-6.

Game 2
Alice Lloyd: 10 - Rio Grande: 8
The Caney Creek clubbers grabbed an early lead, fell behind in the middle innings, and then roared back in the clutch to take the sweep.
The Kentucky club would fall behind 1-0 in the first before answering with a 3-run burst of their own to pull ahead, 3-0.
In the second, they repeated the feat by producing another 3-spot. Now, after two innings of action, the hosts led 6-1.
Unfortunately, the momentum would change as Rio stormed back. Errors by Alice Lloyd spurred a 3-run third and 4-run fourth, which helped the Buckeye-state team take an 8-6 advantage.
Thankfully, in the bottom of the fifth, the blue and white scored two runs to tie the score. They then continued the momentum by scoring another pair of runs to regain the advantage, 10-8.
That was all the Eagles needed as they would come through in the clutch and close Rio out to achieve the big sweep.
Trenton Williams started on the mound for ALC, allowing only 1 run and 1 hit in a trio of innings. He was followed by Tate, who allowed 5 runs on 3 hits in 1 inning of work. Finally, Jacob Ayers took the win as he went the final two innings, whiffing 4 while allowing just 2 hits.
At the plate for ALC, Diego Rodriquez, Corey Jefferson, and Beckett all provided 2 RBIs. Rodriquez, Beckett, Grover Maynard, and Jefferson all doubled, while Jefferson also smacked a triple.
The Eagles also took the hitting battle, 8-5, and won despite committing 5 errors.
