Alice Lloyd baseball gains split at Rio Grande University

Rio Grande, OH: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles (16-10)  baseball team ventured to the Buckeye state to battle the Rio Grande University Red Storm (14-20). The Eagles started the campaign on a high note, taking the first contest, before falling in the second to earn a split for the series.

April 1st

Game 1

Alice Lloyd: 5 - Rio Grande: 4

Alice Lloyd opened the game on a positive note as they scored in the first inning. In that at-bat, Diego Rodriguez (SS) singled, then came around to score when Cory Jefferson (2B) duplicated the feat.

RGU answered in their next at-bat as they rode a homer and triple to produce 4 runs and jump out 4-1. However, the Eagles responded.

In the top of the fourth, Kyle Johnson (CF) was joined by Rodriguez and Jefferson with timely singles. This would enable the Bluegrass boys to rally and knot the score up, 4-4.

Things remained the same until the sixth. In that inning, The Caney creel clubbers saw the duo of Rodriguez and Jefferson come through once more with clutch singles to lift their crew to a 5-4 advantage.

After that, ALC pitching delivered in the final two innings as they retired the Red Storm in order to preserve the victory.

At the plate, Jefferson and Rodriguez were money as they combined to go 4-4 and 3-4 at the plate. Colton Lovelace led the way with 2 RBIs.

Gage Hensley started on the mound for ALC and took a nice win. He allowed 4 runs, but just 1 earned run, on 6 hits in 7.0 innings of work. He stuck out 6.

The visitors were outhit by the Eagles 9-6, but the home team hurt themselves with 4 errors.

  Game 2

Alice Lloyd: 1 -  Rio Grande: 14

The Red Storm took control in the middle innings to win, going away, and earn a split.

The Kentucky club would ride a Jefferson single in the first to grab a quick 1-0 lead, only to see Rio use a single and solo homer in the second to go ahead, 2-1. They followed up with another 2-spot in the fourth as a single boosted their cushion to 4-1. However, the floodgates would open one inning later.

In the Red Storm fifth, they would rap a single, double, and 3-run blast. They then combined that with 3 crucial ALC errors to roll off 8 massive runs. Now, RGU led 12-1. For good measure, in their half of the sixth, they singled in 2 more security runs (14-1), and eventually closed out the night.

At the plate for ALC, Johnson and Zach Morris (1B), both provided 2 hits. Jefferson had the lone RBI.

On the mound, Karsten Dixon suffered the loss. In 3.1 innings, he allowed 8 hits and 4 earned runs with 1 K. Jacob Ayers (1 inning,2 hits, 6 runs, 0 earned runs,1 K), Connor Caudill, .2 innings, 2 hits, 2 runs, 0 earned runs) and Thomas Forehand (2 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 K'S) appeared in relief.

Rio also took the hitting battle, 14-8, and made less errors, 4-1 .
