Alice Lloyd Eagles Open 2022-23 Basketball Season
Pippa Passes, KY: On October 31st, the Alice Lloyd College Eagles opened the 2022-23 basketball season by hosting the Virginia University of Lynchburg Val Dragons. The visitors took advantage of injuries and cold shooting by the hosts and pulled off the upset win, 78-66.
The Virginia club grabbed a quick lead, and aided by serious foul trouble for ALC, they extended it. A 35-foot bank shot at the buzzer put them ahead 39-31 at intermission.
In the second half, VU would manage to hold on and pull ahead by double digits. Finally, the Pippa Passes club rallied behind the scoring of senior guard Bryce Slone and junior forward Damon Tobler. They would get within a bucket with six minutes remaining. However, the Dragons would bank in another late shot to give them a cushion and then manage to hold on until the final buzzer sounded to grab the win.
For ALC (0-1), three players reached double figures. They were led on the night by Slone with 17 points on 5-9 bombs. Tobler added 15 points and 9 rebounds, while sophomore forward Blaine Keathley came off the bench to garner a double-double of 11 and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Brady Nelson handed out 7 assists, while three players each garnered 1 steal apiece.
ALC shot uncharacteristically poor, finishing at 38.1% (24-63) from the field and 43.5% (10-23) from behind the arc. They sank just 53.3% (8-15) from the foul line and added 43 rebounds, 18 assists, and 3 steals.
For Lynchburg (1-2), Zach Dunn led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. His club finished shooting 47.5% (29-61) from the floor and 28.6% (4-14) from behind the arc. They hit 61.5% (16-26) from the foul line. They also added 41 rebounds, 10 assists, and 4 steals.
ALC returns to action this week on Thursday, November 3rd, when they travel to Louisville to face the Boyce Bulldogs at 7:00 pm.
