Alice Lloyd Eagles Fall to Indiana University Southeast in RSC Tournament
New Albany, IN: The Alice Lloyd Eagles journeyed to the Hoosier State to battle the River States Conference's hottest team, the Indiana University Grenadiers, in the quarter-final round of the River States Conference tournament. IUS took control early and pulled out the 90-77 win.
The host club entered the contest winners of twelve consecutive games, but following a long bomb from senior guard Bryce Slone, the Eagles led 7-6 with 17:16 showing. However, Southeast would roll off a 16-4 run over the next seven minutes to sprint ahead, 22-11. They would remain in control as the Eagles went cold and take a 36-21 lead into intermission.
In the second half, the Pippa Passes club would quickly get within twelve points (38-26) and force a timeout by the Indiana boys, but IUS responded with a big 13-0 run to sprint ahead 51-26. They would not stop there. Later, after they drained a trifecta with 9:48 showing, the lead was up to thirty-two (67-35).
From that point, ALC would turn to sophomore guard Jacob Curry, who led a massive rally. Over the next eight minutes, Curry poured in 22 points with an incredible display of long-distance marksmanship. Unfortunately, the deficit was simply too great to overcome as the Grenadiers held on for their thirteenth straight victory.
For Alice Lloyd (14-14), they would place three in double figures. Curry, whose uncanny range even brought the opposing crowd to their feet in disbelief, led all scorers with 25 points. He swished 8-10 shots, including 7-9 from deep. Senior forward Damon Tobler added 12 points, while junior guard Ben Soumahoro contributed 11.
Slone chipped in with 8 points and 4 assists, while senior center Noah Caudill grabbed 6 boards, and senior center Colyn Sturgill swatted 2 shots. Tobler and Soumahoro each had 2 steals.
ALC shot 48.1% (25-52) from the field, including a solid 52.4% (11-21) from behind the arc. They also shot 76.2% (16-21) from the foul line and added 28 rebounds, 11 assists, and 6 steals.
For IUS (21-8), Jacobi Hendricks scored 17 points. His club shot 50.7% (34-67) from the floor and 40% (8-20) from behind the arc. They hit 87.5% (14-16) from the foul line, and also added 32 rebounds, 16 assists, and 19 steals.
ALC will now play in the NCCAA Mideast Regional Tournament at Asbury University. They earned the overall top seed in the region, which advances them to the finals. They will face the winner of the Friday matchup between Asbury University and Kentucky Christian University on Saturday, February 25th, with the winner advancing to the NCCAA National Tournament. The regional championship will tip off at 4:00 pm.
