Alice Lloyd Eagles Remain Undefeated, Earn Big Road Victory Over Boyce Bulldogs, 89-72 Record now 4-0
Louisville, KY: On Friday, November 10th, the Alice Lloyd Eagles journeyed to Louisville to face the Boyce College Bulldogs. The Eagles would explode to a huge first-half lead, and ride that all the way to an 89-72 victory.
In the opening stanza, the Pippa Passes posse came out focused and combined a strong team defensive effort with the offensive production of junior guard Jacob Curry and senior guard Jared Strickland to go on a run. Leading 7-5 at 13:43, the Eagles would roll off a 22-9 burst as the pair combined to score 15 of the points. When Curry sank a midrange, jump shot with 8:07 showing, the board showed 29-14.
The visitors would build on that momentum. At 2:04, they would see their lead reach its zenith of 25 points when a Strickland bomb set the scoreboard at 49-24. A pair of late Bulldog buckets would send the eastern Kentucky squad into intermission with a sizeable 49-28 advantage.
In the second half, the big-city boys began to cut into the lead, but several hoops from ALC senior forward Ben Soumahoro still had the Eagles leading by 17 (72-55) as the clock dipped below the 10-minute mark.
Sparked by the play of star guard Brody Maderia, BC went on a last-gasp run, and his three-point shot at 4:33 reduced the deficit to single digits, 78-69.
Fortunately for the Caney Creek fans, sophomore guard Jack Brown came through and swished a clutch jumper to right the ship. Later, while moving the ball crisply to preserve the lead, the squad found both him and Soumahoro for monster dunks. Those put the contest out of reach once more and handed their club the satisfying seventeen-point win.
For the victorious Eagles (5-0), they would place four players in double figures. They were paced on the night by Soumahoro, who registered an impressive 17-point (7-12 FG), 14 rebound double-double. He also added 4 assists and 2 blocks to fill the stat sheet.
He was followed by Strickland and Curry, who both scored 13 points. Curry also nabbed 2 steals. Brown chipped in with 10 points and added 4 assists of his own.
In addition, the freshman duo of guard Landon Napier and forward Jackson Tackett both contributed 7 points apiece, while Napier grabbed 4 boards. Senior forward Blaine Keathley aided the cause with 9 big caroms.
The victors shot 47.8% (32-67) from the field, 44.4% (8-16) from beyond the arc, and 70.8% (17-24) from the charity stripe. They snared 47 rebounds, handed off 12 assists, recorded 7 steals, and blocked 6 shots.
Boyce (0-3) was led by Maderia with 30 points. His squad shot 36.5% (23-63) from the field, 37.5% (6-16) from beyond the arc, and 74.1% (20-27) from the charity stripe. They snared 33 big rebounds, handed off 8 assists, and made 8 steals.
The Eagles return to the hardwood on November 18th when they travel to Wilmore (KY) to battle the NCAA DIII Asbury University Eagles. Tipoff is set for 3:00p.m.
