Torrid second-half shooting propels Alice Lloyd to 110-78 victory over IU-Columbus
Columbus, IN: The Alice Lloyd College Eagles blistered the nets in the second half to the tune of 75.6% accuracy and chopped down the Indiana University-Columbus Crimson Pride, 110-72. The River States Conference matchup took place on Saturday, January 18th.
In the opening half, the Eagles got a pair of post-moves from sophomore forward Jackson Tackett to jump out, 8-4. However, fueled by the play of guard Damonte Thompson, the Hoosier club roared back to take a 30-26 lead with 6:38 showing on the clock. ALC would then answer.
Over the remainder of the half, junior guard Koji Anderson pumped in 7 points to lead the Caney Creek crew on a 20-10 run to close the half. When the buzzer sounded, signaling intermission, the Kentucky kids led 46-40. Little did anyone in attendance know that the last run by Alice Lloyd was just a preview of what was to come
In the second half, the Indiana fans were impressed by what they were getting ready to witness as ALC unleashed an amazing display on both ends of the court. In the opening 4:13, the Pippa Passes posse picked up their defensive intensity as they contested every shot and grabbed all rebounds. On offense, they unleashed a blitzkrieg as they scored on eleven consecutive possessions. Suddenly, at 15:47, the score read 69-40.
When IUC finally sank a pair of charity tosses to stop the run (69-42), Eagle senior guard Jacob Curry promptly swished a deep bomb on his club's next possession to give his team a staggering 72-42 advantage. The total run was 26-2 in just five minutes.
Most impressively, every Eagle would play solid minutes and contribute as the Bluegrass boys cruised on their way to the finish line, wrapping up the stunning victory.
For ALC (12-5; 3-3 RSC), six players reached double figures in an incredibly balanced attack. They were led on the day by Anderson, who bagged 6-7 field goals and 5-5 free throws for 19 points. Strickland (4-7 FG) and Tackett (6-7 FG) both had 13 points. Senior forward Ben Soumahoro (4-5 FG) and Curry (4-6 FG) added 12 and 11 points, respectively, while sophomore guard Landon Napier chipped in with 10.
Soumahoro led the way with 7 rebounds, while senior guard Brady Nelson handed out 4 assists. Strickland recorded 2 steals and 2 blocks.
For the game, the Eagles shot 59.7% (40-67) from the field, including 75.7% (25-33) in the huge second half. They also connected on 34.5% (10-29) from beyond the arc and 62.5% (20-32) from the free throw line. They added 39 rebounds, 16 assists, 4 blocks, and 7 steals.
The Crimson Pride (1-17; 0-6 RSC) were led by Thompson with 19 points. His crew shot 34.8% (24-69) from the field, 20% (5-25) from behind the arc, and 79.2% (19-24) from the charity line. They added 33 rebounds, 13 assists, 1 block, and 6 steals.
The Eagles return home on Thursday, January 23rd when they host the Indiana University- Kokomo Cougars in a big RSC showdown.Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
