Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagle Softball Opens 2023 Season

Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles opened up softball play on Friday, February 17th, when they hosted the Concordia University Cardinals (Michigan) in a four-game series. Following are recaps of each contest.

February 18th

Game 1

Concordia-5; Alice Lloyd-2

The first game of the season went to the visitors from up north.

Concordia opened the day with a big 3-spot to take a quick lead. A triple was the hit to start them in that positive direction (3-0)

The Lady Eagles would earn one of those back in their opening-at-bat. Lyndsey Adkins (1B) singled, then scored on the double from Maleigh McDaniel (P). However, she was left on base (3-1).

The visitors promptly made that run back in the second with a double (4-1). They then brought in an insurance run in the top of the third on a fielder's choice (5-1).

ALC received a gift run on an error in the bottom of the inning (5-2), but the rally died with two runners still on base.

From that point, pitching dominated as no other runs would be produced.

Adkins had 2 hits, while McDaniel and Alexis Morris (2B) both doubled. McDaniel had 1 RBI. Her squad would leave 4 runners on base.

McDaniel suffered the loss on the mound. She went 6.2 innings, allowing 9 hits and 5 earned runs while striking out 3 and walking 4. The Eagles hurt themselves by stranding 15 runners on base. They were outhit, 8-6.

The Cardinals recorded 9 hits, with 3 going for extra bases. They left 7 stranded on base and committed the game's lone error.

GAME 2

Concordia-15; Alice Lloyd-1

Concordia jumped out quickly to win in five.

They came out with hot bats as they produced a huge 7-run first inning. A triple and a double helped inflict the damage (7-0).

The status quo remained until the fourth. In that inning, the Cardinals rode 2 doubles, 3 singles, and an error to register 8 massive runs (15-0).

ALC scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth when Ellee Hunt (DP) singled and later scored on an Alexis Morris double. (15-1). Unfortunately, that would be the lone run the hosts could muster.

Hunt had 2 hits, while Morris provided the RBI. They would leave 4 runners on base. 2 errors also proved costly.

On the mound, Baylee Cox started and went .2 innings. She allowed 4 hits and 5 runs before being relieved by Haley Howell. She went 4.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and 9 earned runs while striking out 4 and walking 4. The Eagles hurt themselves by stranding 5 runners on base. They were outhit, 15-5.

The Cardinals recorded 15 hits, with 5 going for extra bases. They left 7 stranded on base and committed 1 error.

February 19th

Game 1

Concordia-4; Alice Lloyd-3

Sunday saw Concordia hang on to win two close games.

In the opener, the Michigan squad produced 2 runs in each of the first two innings. A two-run blast gave them the 2-0 advantage in the first.

In their next at-bat, a double and a fielder's choice plated two more (4-1).

The Lady Eagles remained scoreless until their final at-bat, but they broke through in the bottom of the seventh.

First, they took advantage of a CU throwing error, and two Lady Eagles crossed home (4-2). Then, with one on, Chloe Taylor smashed a double to left-center to produce another score (4-3). She would advance to third base, but with the tying run on, a grounder ended the contest.

McDaniel, Taylor, and Katie Deeds (C) had the only hits of the day for the Caney Creek crew, with Taylor providing the RBI. They would leave 4 runners on base and commit 1 error.

McDaniel suffered the hard-luck loss on the mound. She went the distance, allowing just 6 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 4 and walking 6. The Eagles stranded 4 runners on base. They were outhit, 6-3.

The Cardinals recorded 6 hits and left 8 stranded on base. They also had the important homerun.

Game 2

Concordia-5; Alice Lloyd-2

ALC jumped ahead early but could not hold on as they dropped the final game.

The Pippa Passes club opened the day with 2 scores. These came from a single by Adkins and a fielder's choice (2-0).

The Cardinals use a single in the top of the second to knot things (2-2), only to see the home club retake the lead in the bottom half.

In that at-bat, with runners on, an error allowed ALC to regain the advantage (3-2).

The visitors promptly went ahead in the third, as two singles would lead to a 3-run flurry (5-3).

Yet again, the hosts rallied. In the very next Eagle at-bat, CU committed two costly errors with runners on. When the dust settled, the score was deadlocked once more (5-5).

Nothing changed over the next two innings, but the momentum finally switched in the later innings.

In the sixth, with runners on base, Concordia smacked a big single to produce 2 runs (7-5). Then in the final inning, another single gave them an important insurance run (8-5).

Now needing three scores to tie and down to their last chance, the Caney Creek club went down swinging in the seventh.

Five different Eagles had hits, with Adkins, McDaniel, and Rachel Rife (LF) each providing 1 RBI. The Eagles stranded 3 runners on base. They were outhit, 11-5.

On the mound, Howell started and went 2.1 innings. She allowed 5 hits and 5 runs. Taylor and Cox provided relief, with Taylor giving up 4 hits and 2 runs (3 K's), while Cox allowed 2 hits and 1 run (2 K's).

The Cardinals recorded 11 hits and left 9 stranded on base.
