Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles Softball Travels to Rio Grande University

Rio Grande, OH: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team returned to action on March 18th as they traveled to the Buckeye State to face River States Conference foe, Rio Grande University. After the series had ended, the Red Storm had managed to achieve a sweep.

 

March 18th

GAME 1

Alice Lloyd-2; Rio-5

 

The Lady Red Storm Eagles scored first, then held off a comeback effort to take the victory.

The scoring started in the second when RGU managed 2 scores on a sacrifice fly and an error (2-0). Things remained unchanged until the bottom of the fifth when a Rio homerun made the score 3-0.

ALC battled back in the sixth when Mckenzie Orfield (3B) and Maleigh Mcdaniel (P) each reached base. They both crossed the plate when Aspyn Branham (PH) drove them in with a double (3-2).

Unfortunately, Rio earned those scores right back in their next-at-bat when a single drove in two runs (5-2).

The Eagles then went down in the seventh to end the contest.

At the plate, Lyndsey Adkins (1B) and Rachel Rife (LF) each had 2 hits while Branham had both RBI's.

Maleigh Mcdaniel suffered the loss on the mound, as she allowed 7 hits and 3 earned runs in 5.1 innings. She struck out 2 batters. Kursten Napier tossed the final 0.2 innings, giving up 0hits and striking out 1.

Both squads had 7 hits, but the Caney crew committed the onlytwo errors of the game.

 

 

 

 

GAME 2

Alice Lloyd- 3, Rio-9

 ALC battled close before dropping the second contest in the middle innings.

The Lady Eagles struck immediately when a wild pitch gave them a quick score (1-0). However, the hosts took the lead back in their opening at-bat when two singles plated 3 runners (3-1).

The Pippa Passes squad picked up 1 in the second when Branham lofted a long sacrifice to dead center to bring Orfieldhome (3-2), only to see the Red Storm return the favor with a walk (4-2) in the same inning.

Things took a turn in the Ohio squads favor in the fourth. In that inning, a single and a sacrifice fly brought in 3 Red Storm runs (7-2)

ALC tried to respond in the fifth when Mcdaniels long double brought Adkins in to score (7-3). Unfortunately, in the same inning, Rio unleashed a crucial 2-run shot over the left centerfield fence, and the final score was set (9-3). 

Adkins went 3-4 from the plate and Mcdaniel had 2 hits. Mcdaniel and Branham provided 1 RBI each.

On the mound, Baylee Cox pitched three innings, allowing 9 hits, with 7 earned runs and 1 K. Haley Howell came on for 2 innings, and gave up 0 hits. Carlee Creech gave up 2 runs, and Orfield retired the final 2 batters. 

Alice Lloyd was outhit 11-9 and committed 2 errors.
