
Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles Softball Earns RSC Split, with Brescia University
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles (5-11) returned home on March 23rd for a doubleheader with River States Conference opponent, Brescia University (4-8). For the day, the hosts would outhit their opponents both games, and come away with a split for the series.
March 23
GAME ONE
Brescia-5; Alice Lloyd-2
The Lady Bearcats held on to win in the series opener.
In the first inning, BU struck quickly with a score on a double (1-0). However, ALC responded in their second at-bat when Aspyn Branham (DH) singled to knot the game at 1-1.
In the Bearcat fourth, two singles and an error delivered 3 more crucial scores (4-1). They would then add an insurance run in the fifth (5-1) with 3 singles.
The Eagles attempted to fight back in the final inning as they laced three hits, including an RBI double from Alexis Morris (2B), making the score 5-2. Unfortunately, with two runners on and only one out, the final two batters grounded to the first baseman to end the game.
At the plate, Branham, Morris, Ellie Keene (C), and Mckenzie Orfield (3B) all provided 2 hits, while Branham and Morris had 1 RBI apiece.
Maleigh McDaniel (P) allowed 7 hits and 4 earned runs in taking the loss. She gave up 2 walks and struck out 3 batters. Kursten Napier (P) pitched the final two innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out 1.
ALC won the hitting battle 11-8, and each club committed 1 error. They left 8 runners on base.
GAME TWO
Brescia 6; Alice Lloyd-7
The Pippa Passes ladies roared ahead, then were forced to weather a comeback before earning the victory.
ALC got out of the gate fast in the first inning. A hit-batter, followed by a single from Lyndsey Adkins (1B) put two runners on. Next, a solid double from McDaniel (SS) drove in both (2-0).
In the second, after a Carlee Muncy (LF) single, Morris unleashed a big blow over the left field fence for a 4-0 advantage.
In the Eagle fourth, Brescia committed two costly errors, which allowed 2 Eagles to scamper home. Now, the Caney Creek crew led 6-0, and looked in command. However, the tide would suddenly turn.
After only having 3 hits over the first four innings, BU unleashed 5 singles in the fifth. This led to a windfall of 4 runs. Now, the score read 6-4.
After a scoreless sixth, Brescia then came up in the final inning and promptly spaced out 3 more singles to tie the game (6-6). Fortunately, the go-ahead run was left stranded on base.
In the bottom of the seventh, Adkins opened with a hard double to right field. A wild pitch then advanced her to third. Then the Eagles got the break of the game when another wild pitch allowed her to race home for the game-winner, and earn a split for the series.
For ALC, Adkins, went 3-4 with the bat, while Orfield had 2. Morris and McDaniel both had 2 RBIs.
Pitcher Baylee Cox started on the mound and pitched well. She went 4.2 innings and gave up 8 hits, but 0 earned runs. She whiffed 5 batters. Haley Howell (P) allowed 3 hits and 2 runs in two innings but struck out 3. McDaniel came in at the end and gave up 0 hits to earn the win.
ALC won the hitting battle once more, 11-8, and committed 1 error compared to the Bearcats' 3. They left 5 runners on base.
