Alice Lloyd softball splits with the University of Pikeville

Pippa Passes:  On February 15th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team played home for the first time in 2024 as they faced a solid University of Pikeville Lady Bears squad. Fueled by an impressive pitching performance, the Caney Creek crew would take the opener, before dropping the nightcap, to earn a split.

Game 1

Alice Lloyd-1; UPike-0

Despite being held hitless throughout the contest, ALC would use an incredible pitching and defensive effort to take down the Lady Bears 1-0.

ALC send ace Maleigh McDaniel (P) to the mound to face UPike's top pitcher AJ Alincic. After a clean first inning, Pikeville placed a runner on third in the second. However, a pop-up ended the threat.

In the fourth, the Eagles would threaten when Mckenzie Orfield (SS) was hit by a pitch and stole her way to third base. Unfortunately, she would remain stranded.

Over the next two innings, UP would manage only a single, but the ALC defense would not break, as the runner would get no further than third base.

In the seventh inning, the Bears would open with a single, then advance the runner to second. Once again, McDaniel would bear down and induce a harmless grounder then force a popup to put UPike away.

In the bottom of the seventh, McDaniel reached on an error and swiftly stole second.  Next Aspyn Branham (3B) struck out, but was able to race to first when the pitch got away from the catcher. Then, after Ellie Hunt (PH) reached first base on a fielder's choice, the bags were suddenly loaded with Eagles.

With a chance to win, the Pippa Passes posse sent Carlee Muncy (1B) to the plate, and she skillfully laid down a bunt. When McDaniel slid home to beat the play at the plate, ALC had earned the 1-0 victory despite not getting an official hit for the contest.

McDaniel scored the only run of the contest and Muncy was credited with the lone RBI. McDaniel was impressive on the mound as she scattered 6 hits over 7 innings to take the win. She only allowed two walks.

The victorious squad would help themselves by stealing 6 bases and playing error-free ball, compared to UPikes 0 steals and 2 critical errors.

Alincic pitched an impressive no-hitter for Pikeville, but still suffered the loss. She did strike out 9 batters, but walked 3 and hit 2.
