Alice Lloyd softball travels to powerful Rio Grande University for doubleheader

Rio Grande, OH:  On March 22nd, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team journeyed to the Buckeye State to face one of the RSC's top-teams, the Rio Grande University Red Storm, in a twin bill. The Lady Eagles battled furiously, but the hosts would manage to tame the ALC bats and take two close contests. Alice Lloyds record now sits at 12-14 (1-9 RSC) while RGU moves to 15-7 (7-3 RSC).

Game 1

Alice Lloyd-0; RGU-8

ALC was held to just one hit as they dropped the opener. The blue and white gave up a score in the first on a sacrifice fly (1-0). They would give up a second run in the RGU second on another long out (2-0).

In the Rio third, they would use a pair of singles to plate three scores (5-0). In their very next at-bat, they would repeat that scenario, scoring a trio of runs on a bases clearing double (8-0).

This would end the scoring as the Lady Eagles were never able to get the crucial hits when they needed them to mount a comeback.

The Red Storm won the hitting battle 8-1. The Lady Eagles only hit was a single from Aubree Laster (RF). She stole second, but was left stranded on base.

Mckenzie Orfield started and took the loss on the mound. She allowed 4 hits and 3 earned runs with 4 walks and 1 strikeout. She was relieved by Rylee Cox who gave up 4 hits and 2 runs in .1 innings.

The Kentucky ladies hurt themselves by committing the only 3 errors of the day.

Alice Lloyd- 0; RGU-5

ALC had a tough time at the plate for the second consecutive game and it proved decisive.

In the bottom of the first, Rio used a pair of singles and an error to earn two scores (2-0).

The bottom of the third inning proved to be tough for the visitors. With two out and a runner on first, the Red Storm stuck, utilizing a single, double and single to plate a trio of runs. The Ohio team now led 5-0.

Finally, in the fifth, with two away, ALC finally placed runners on base. Carlee Muncy (1B) drew a walk, then Audrey Mowell (DP) laced a single. Now just needing a hit to possibly earn some runs, the next batter smacked a screaming liner to left that was unfortunately caught. This ended the threat.

In their next at bat, the Lady Eagles gave themselves another chance. Chloe Taylor (2B) drew a walk, which was followed by a single from catcher Ellie Keene. Later with two outs, they would have runners on the corners, and just need one big play to change the momentum. Unfortunately, the runner on first would be thrown out attempting to steal second, and this threat was also thwarted.

Finally, in the seventh, the Caney Creek crew would fight back and once again place a pair of runners on base with two outs. However, in need of that one big hit to possibly turn the tide, the final batter struck out, ending the contest.

For the Eagles, Mowell and Keene had the only two hits of the matchup.

On the mound, Maleigh McDaniel deserved a better fate. She gave up just 6 hits with 4 earned runs. She struck out 1 and only walked 3.

The Bluegrass ladies would be outhit 6-2. They hurt themselves by committing the only 3 errors of the day.
