Alice Lloyd softball bats contained by top-ranked Indiana University Southeast
New Albany, IN: On April 5th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team traveled to the Hoosier state to battle the River States' top team, the Indiana University Southeast Grenadiers, in a doubleheader. The IU crew got two impressive efforts on the mound and used those to shut out the Bluegrass squad in both games.
ALC's record is 14-20 (3-15 RSC), while IUS's is a conference-best 22-11 (16-2 RSC).
Game 1
Alice Lloyd-0; IUS-8
Indiana Southeast won by tossing a one-hit shutout.
The scoreboard remained unscathed until the third when the hosts used a double and a pair of singles to score four runs (4-0).
In the fourth, ALC saw Chloe Taylor lace a single. However, she remained stranded on base. Little did anyone realize this would be the only hit the Lady Eagles would manage the entire day.
IUS would then add two scores in the fourth off of back-to-back singles (6-0) and sneak two more runs across the home sack in the fifth, aided by three wild pitches and an error (8-0).
Taylor had the lone hit for the game for the Lady Eagles at the plate. Four of her teammates reached base via walk, but none made it further than second base.
On the mound, Katie Samuel started and went 2.2 innings. She allowed 3 hits and 2 earned runs with 3 walks and 1 strikeout. Rylee Cox went 1.1 innings and gave up 3 hits and a pair of runs, while Carley Creech gave up a pair of runs in 1 inning.
The Grenadiers had just 6 hits on the day. The Lady Eagles were limited to only 1 hit and hurt themselves by committing 3 errors.
Game 2
Alice Lloyd-0; IUS-9
The Pippa Passes crew went down in order as Southeast threw a perfect game to earn the sweep.
In the second inning, IU Southeast would combine five hits with two Eagle errors to vault ahead, 5-0. Then, in the fourth, a trio of hits and an error by the Pippa Passes club made the score 9-0. The hosts would close out the game from there.
For the Eagles, fifteen batters would come to the plate, and all of them would go down at the hands of IUS pitcher Madison Wathen.
On the mound for ALC, Kirsten Vice, Maleigh McDaniel, and Kinna Justice combined to give up 11 hits and 5 earned runs on the day.
The Indiana club would only rap 6 hits, but the no-hitter, combined with 3 errors from the Caney Creek team, would be more than enough on this day.
