Alice Lloyd softball falls in doubleheader at Midway University

Midway, KY: On April 6th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team traveled to central Kentucky to battle the Midway University Eagles in a doubleheader. The home crew pulled away late to take the opener before jumping out quickly and withstanding a furious rally to take the nightcap.

ALC's record now sits at 14-22 (3-17 RSC), while MU moves to 13-15 (11-7 RSC).

Game 1

Alice Lloyd-2; MU-10

The hosts opened the scoring right out of the gate by utilizing two singles to plate a run (1-0).

In the ALC second, after a walk put Carlee Muncy (1B) on first base, Chloe Taylor (2B) laced a missile down the right field line that stayed fair for a homer (2-1). However, the host Eagles would gain that run right back in the bottom of the inning, sparked by a double (2-2).

Midway asserted itself with four scores in the fourth. The burst came courtesy of a pair of doubles and a two-run blast (6-2).

The Caney Creek crew had an opportunity for a big fourth inning but left a pair of runners stranded on base. Midway then took advantage when they came to bat, smacking three hits to earn two runs (8-2). They would then slam the door shut in the fifth, knocking three hits to provide two runs and end the contest ahead 10-2.

For the day, besides Taylor's homer and 2 RBIs, the Eagle bats were contained as they could only muster three singles the rest of the way.

On the mound, Maleigh McDaniel suffered the loss. In 4 innings of throws, she gave up 7 hits and 6 earned runs with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts. Kinna Justice and Rylee Cox relieved, as they went 1.1 innings and gave up 6 hits and 4 runs.

The eastern Kentucky Eagles were outhit 13-4, and the victors won in steals, 4-1.

Game 2

Alice Lloyd-4; MU-5

The Pippa Passes crew rallied from a 5-0 deficit in their final at-bat before falling in the second game.

The pitching was impressive by both squads early, as both limited their opponents to two singles until the fourth.

In that big inning, MU staggered a double, three singles, and a walk to produce two runs. They now led 2-0.

Then, in the sixth, Midway appeared to have the game on ice. They would parlay three singles and a walk to gain three more runs. Now, the central Kentucky squad would enter the last inning with a solid 5-0 cushion.

With their backs against the wall, the Pippa Passes ladies fought back. Pinch-hitter Ashley Wells led off with a double, which was followed by a walk from Taylor. Then, a single from Ellee Hunt scored 5-1. The next batter, Mackenzie Newport, then singled to load the bases.

Katie Deeds strolled to the plate and laid out her own single for a run of 5-2. This was immediately followed by a Mckenzie Orfield (CF) single, which brought in a pair of teammates. Suddenly, the scoreboard read 5-4 with nobody out.

Unfortunately, the magical spell would quickly be broken. First, a fielder's choice would lead to the opening out. Then the next batter would drive a deep fly to center for out number two. Lastly, with a pair of runners on base, the final batter would ground out to the shortstop to end the game.

For the ALC Eagles, McDaniel (SS) led her club with a pair of hits, while Orfield led with two RBIs.

On the mound for ALC, Kirsten Vice went 5.1 innings in taking the tough loss. She gave up 9 hits but only 1 earned run. Katie Samuel retired the final two batters in relief.

Midway would only win the hitting battle, 9-8. However, a pair of errors from the visitors would aid their cause.
