Impressive Second Half Lifts Lady Eagles to 60-47 Road Win Over Welch College

Gallatin, TN:  The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles utilized a solid defensive effort, and steady shooting in the final twenty minutes, to overcome an 8-point halftime deficit and take down the Welch College Lady Flames, 60-47. The nonconference matchup took place Friday afternoon in the Volunteer state.

In the opening period, the hosts relied on the hot-hand of guard Macey Bowman, whose 8 points helped give her club a 19-15 advantage after ten minutes of play.

In the second quarter, Alice Lloyd could not buy a basket, only connecting on 15% from the field (2-13). Unfortunately, this would propel the Flames to a 31-23 cushion at intermission.

In the third period, the Caney Creek club would finally heat up on offense. Just as important, they also tightened up on the defensive end and forced 9 turnovers. ALC would capitalize on these WC mistakes to take the quarter 21-12, and would hold a slim 44-43 advantage heading into the last ten minutes.

In the final stanza, the Lady Eagles would see junior forward Madison Thompson and freshman guard Shelby Stewart combine for all the points in a critical 10-0 run over the first five minutes. On the opposite end, they would limit Welch to just 13% shooting (2-15) and blow the contest open. ALC would take the segment 16-4, and earn their tenth victory of the season.

For the Pippa Passes posse (10-2), sophomore guard Katie Jo Moore drilled half of her 12 shots to lead the way with 14 points. Senior guard Hannah Kash came close to a triple-double, as she finished right behind with 13 points, snagged 12 rebounds, and dished off 7 assists.

Stewart drained 4-10 bombs to finish with 12 points while Thompson chipped in with 10 points, grabbed 9 caroms, and swatted 2 shots. Senior center Bailee Brainard picked off 5 passes.

The victors won shooting 35.5% (22-62) from the field and 30% (9-30) from long range. They connected on 87.5% (7-8) from the foul line, and added 44 rebounds, 18 assists, and 10 steals.

Welch (3-9) was paced by Bowman with 18 points. Her squad finished shooting 39.1% (18-46) from the field and 40% (6-15) from long range. They connected on 83.3% (5-6) from the foul line. They also added 25 rebounds, 11 assists, and 13 steals.

The Lady Eagles return to action next Thursday, December 29th, when they travel to Eastern Kentucky University for an exhibition matchup at 7:00pm. Their last regular-season game of 2022 is one day later, when they travel to Barboursville to play the Union College Lady Bulldogs. Tipoff is set for 2:00pm.
