
Lady Eagles Fall in Overtime at Indiana University Southeast
New Albany, IN: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles held a twenty-one-point lead with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter, only to watch the homestanding Indiana University Southeast Lady Grenadiers came all the way back to send the game into overtime, and eventually pull off the comeback win, 75-72. The matchup took place Tuesday in the Hoosier state.
In the opening period, sophomore guard Katie Jo Moore, and senior guard Hannah Kash combined for nine points and lifted their squad to a 15-8 advantage after ten minutes of action
In the second quarter, the duo remained hot as they netted 10 more points between them This shooting, coupled with solid team defense, permitted ALC to take a 36-20 lead at intermission.
In the third period, the Caney Creek club would see Moore score seven consecutive points as her team opened the first four minutes on a 10-5 burst to pull ahead 46-25. IUS would close the quarter with a 13-5 run of their own. Regardless, Alice Lloyd still held a 51-38 cushion heading into the last quarter.
In the final stanza, the Grenadiers would turn up the pressure as the Pippa Passes club would go ice cold. IU Southeast would use that to their advantage as they went on a 15-2 run. Suddenly, with 4:37 left to play, the score was knotted up at 53-53.
The two squads would then trade buckets as the clock dipped into the final minute. Eventually, with just .20 remaining, the score showing 60-60, and ALC with the ball, Moore would miss a shot in the paint. However, she would retrieve her own rebound and score on the follow-up. Now with just 3.5 seconds left, the Lady Eagles held a 62-60 lead. All they needed was one stop on defense.
Unfortunately, after a timeout advanced the ball three-quarters of the court, the Indiana squad threw the ball to Lauren Lambdin. Her driving shot banked in just ahead of the buzzer, and the contest entered overtime tied at 62.
In OT, the Caney Creek crew scored the first four points, only to see the hosts tie yet again (66-66) at 3:53. Then, after trading hoops, ALC would take a 72-71 lead with just over one minute remaining on a Moore lay in.
Disappointingly for the visitors, things would turn sour as IU Southeast guard Emmy Ralph would then sink jumpers on back-to-back possessions to put her club ahead by three (75-72) with .09 showing. The Lady Eagles would get a desperation three at the buzzer, but the shot came up short, handing the Hoosier squad the comeback victory.
For Alice Lloyd (14-5; 7-4 RSC), Moore came up huge, leading the way with 28 points (12-23 FG's). She added seven rebounds and six steals. Kash finished with 21 points. She dished off four assists and grabbed four boards. Senior center Bailee Brainard chipped in with seven points and five blocks.
The Eagles shot 44.1% (30-68) from the field and 42.1% (8-19) from long range. They connected on 44.4% (4-9) from the foul line, and added 41 rebounds, 17 assists, 12 steals., and 7 blocks
IU Southeast (13-7; 6-5 RSC) was paced by Lambdin with 26 points. Her squad finished shooting 36.6% (26-71) from the field and 33.3% (9-27) from deep. They connected on 77.8% (14-18) from the foul line. They also added 47 rebounds, 15 assists, and 9 steals.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Saturday when they journey to central Kentucky to face the Midway Eagles in a doubleheader. Tipoff is set for 1:00 pm.
