Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles Drop 84-77 Decision to Johnson University
Pippa Passes, KY: On Thursday, November 2nd, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles hosted the Johnson University Lady Royals at the Perry Center and "Coach J Court." ALC had taken Johnson out in the season opener just last week in the Royals own arena, 80-71, and hoped to give an encore performance this time before the home fans. Unfortunately, it was not to be as the visitors would take advantage of 14 big threes and timely free throw shooting to steal an 84-77 victory.
In the opening period, ALC jumped ahead 7-3 on an old-fashioned, three-point play from senior guard Hannah Kash at 7:02. However, for the remainder of the stanza, the home team would be limited to just two buckets, both by freshman guard Abby Maggard. This enabled the Royals to close with an 18-4 burst, and they would lead 21-11 after ten minutes of action. They were not done.
In the second quarter, the Tennessee club would ride the play of center Hannah Jones to power up a 10-2 flurry in under three minutes. Suddenly, with 7:20 remaining in the half, Johnson led 31-13. Over a nearly ten-minute stretch, the visitors had dropped a mammoth 28-6 bomb and appeared to be in complete control. Fortunately, Alice Lloyd woke up.
Five quick points from junior guard Katie Jo Moore got the action started (31-13). Then, Kash preceded to score 13 of the next 17 points to reduce the margin even further. That production would help propel ALC to within just four (38-34) by intermission.
As the third period began, the host squad would knot the score at 40-40 thanks to a downtown trifecta delivered by Moore. To their credit, JU would suddenly calm down and control the rest of the period. A 21-15 run enabled the visitors to head into the final ten minutes of play, clinging to a 61-55 lead.
In the final period, the Pippa Passes posse would receive 10 points from Maggard, but the Volunteer squad refused to be denied as they took the stanza 23-22 to pull out the nice 84-77 decision.
For Alice Lloyd (2-1), three players reached double figures. They were led on the night by Kash and Maggard, who both tossed in 20 points. Kash added 4 rebounds, 7 assists, and 1 steal, while Maggard drilled 8-9 attempts, including 4-5 long bombs.
Moore chipped in with 17 points, 6 boards, and 2 steals, while senior forward Madison Thompson contributed 6 points, 8 boards, and 2 blocks. In addition, sophomore guard Shelby Stewart and freshman forward Jamie Cowen both delivered 2 steals to the cause.
The Caney Club finished shooting 39% (30-77) from the field and a season-low 27.6% (8-29) from long range. They connected on 75% (9-12) from the foul line while adding 39 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 blocks and 8 steals.
JU (1-1) was paced by Jones with 19 points. Her squad finished shooting 46.4% (26-56) from the field, 45.2% (14-31) from deep and a decisive 81.2% (18-22) from the charity stripe. They also added 39 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 blocks and 8 steals.
The Lady Eagles return to action this Saturday, November 4th, when they journey to Gallatin (TN) to battle the Welch College Lady Flames for a 4:00 pm (EST) tipoff. The ALC men vs Welch will follow that game at 6:00 pm.
