
Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles Fall to # 13 University of the Cumberlands, 81-64
Pippa Passes, KY: On Tuesday, November 7th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles hosted the NAIA's 13th-ranked squad, the University of the Cumberlands Lady Patriots. UC got off to a fantastic start and used that early momentum to pull out the 81-64 victory.
In the opening period, the visitors pulled out to a 12-7 lead before turning on the jets., Sparked by Destiny Hayworth, over the last 4:30 of the quarter, they would roll off a 16-0 blitz. The Patriots would lead 28-7 after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, ALC freshman forward Jamie Cowan came off the bench to score 5 of her club's 11 points. However, Cumberlands would add 15 to their tally and take a commanding 43-18 cushion into the locker room at intermission.
In the third period, the Caney Creek duo of senior Hannah Kash, and junior Katie Jo Moore went to work. The guards would try their best to shrink the deficit, and they would combine for half of their squad's 26-point production. However, UC would refuse to give an inch, as seven different Patriots accounted for 27 points to their side of the scoreboard. This production enabled the visitors to enter the final ten minutes of play with a solid 70-44 lead.
In the final period, the Pippa Passes posse would refuse to quit as they pumped in 20 points while tightening up on defense to limit the Williamsburg club to just 11. However, the disadvantage was too great to overcome as the Patriots held on for the 81-64 victory.
For Alice Lloyd (3-2), three players reached double figures. They were led on the night by Moore with 16 points. She added 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. She was followed closely by Kash and Cowan, who both tossed in 15 points. Cowan would add 2 blocks.
In addition, McKenzie Maynard would chip in with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks while senior forward Madison Thompson swatted 4 shots.
The Caney Club finished shooting 39.4% (26-66) from the field and 34.6% (9-26) from long range. They connected on 50% (3-6) from the foul line while adding 35 rebounds, 13 assists, 9 blocks and 6 steals.
Hayworth paced UC (5-0) with 20 points. Her squad finished shooting 45.4% (32-70) from the field, 37% (10-27) from behind the arc, and 58.3% (7-12) from the charity stripe. They also added 48 rebounds, 21 assists, 6 blocks and 10 steals.
The Lady Eagles are off until November 17th, when they host the Lindsey Wilson Lady Raiders at 6:00 p.m.
