Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles drop close contest to Asbury University, 65-60
Pippa Passes, KY: On Tuesday, January 9th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles hosted the Asbury University Lady Eagles squad in NCCAA play. The central Kentucky Eagles came back in the second half and held on late to pull out the 65-60 victory.
In the opening stanza, both squads were cold. ALC was limited to just 26.7 % shooting while their counterparts shot just 31.6%. However, the host Eagles sank a couple of bombs which helped them tie the score at 12-12 after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the hosts turned to senior guard Hannah Kash and freshman guard Abby Maggard, who scored 10 of their squads 17 points. Due to the input from the duo, Alice Lloyd would take a 29-26 advantage at intermission.
In the third period, Asbury would drill half of their eighteen attempts which propelled them on a comeback. A decisive 26-point effort would lift AU to a 52-45 cushion heading into the last quarter.
In the final period, the Pippa Passes club would get the ball to Kash, and her 10 points would help reduce the deficit to just two points (62-60) with only .18 remaining.
Unfortunately, the visiting squad would close the contest with three important free throws, and this was just enough to enable them to hold on for the close 65-60 win.
For Alice Lloyd (8-7), Kash, who was the only Lady Eagle in double figures, led everyone with 21 points on 9-19 field goals. She added 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
She was followed by freshman forward Jamie Cowen with 9 points, and 9 rebounds, and Maggard, with 7 points and 3 assists of her own. In addition, senior forward Madison Thompson ripped down 15 rebounds and swatted 3 shots.
The eastern Kentucky team finished shooting 37.7% (23-61) from the field and 33.3% (7-21) from long range. They also sank 50% (7-14) from the foul line while adding 49 rebounds, 13 assists, 5 blocks and 1 steal.
Haleigh Raleford paced the winning team (10-7) with 14 points. Her squad finished shooting 31.8% (21-66) from the field, 13.8% (4-29) from behind the arc, and 79.2% (19-24) from the charity stripe. They also added 41 rebounds, 11 assists, 5 blocks and 10 steals
The Lady Eagles are off until Saturday, January 13th when they host the Indiana University East Red Wolves in an important conference contest. Tipoff is set for 1:00 pm.
