
Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles drop road contest to Asbury University
Wilmore, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles traveled to central Kentucky to face the homestanding Asbury University Lady Eagles squad in NCCAA play. The visiting Eagles played well in the first half, but cold shooting in the final twenty minutes proved costly as they fell to AU, 71-54. The match was held on Tuesday, January 30th.
In the opening stanza, ALC had excellent balance Six players would dent the scoreboard, sparked by 5 points from senior guard Hannah Kash. On the other side, the hosts were limited to just 20 % shooting. This lifted the Caney Creek crew to a 15-11 advantage after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, ALC saw Kash and freshman forward Jamie Cowan combine for 13 big points. This production, combined with a solid defensive effort by Alice Lloyd, boosted the guests to a 32-22 cushion at intermission. Unfortunately, for the visitors, things would drastically change.
In the third period, Asbury would finally catch fire, draining 62% of their attempts. This would propel them on a huge comeback. A 28-13 advantage would lift AU to a 50-45 lead heading into the last quarter.
In the final period, the Pippa Passes club would hope to return the favor. Unfortunately, AU would start off with four consecutive steals and an 8-0 run. This momentum would propel the hometown club on a massive 17-2 clinching blitzkrieg in 6:27, and they would vault ahead, 67-47. From that point, Asbury would remain in control until the final buzzer sounded.
For Alice Lloyd (10-11), Kash, who was the only Lady Eagle in double figures, finished with 16 points. She added 8 rebounds and 5 steals. Cowen added 9 points, and 8 rebounds, while senior forward Madison Thompson chipped in with 8 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals.
The eastern Kentucky team finished shooting 36.2% (21-58) from the field and 20% (4-20) from long range. They also sank 61.5% (8-13) from the foul line while adding 39 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 blocks and 9 steals.
Haleigh Raleford paced the winning team (14-7) with 23 points. Her squad finished shooting 41.2% (28-68) from the field, 24% (6-25) from behind the arc, and 56.3% (9-16) from the charity stripe. They also added 30 rebounds, 13 assists, 4 blocks and 19 steals
The Lady Eagles are off until Saturday, January 3rd when they host the Ohio Christian Trailblazers in an important conference contest. Tipoff is set for 1:00 pm.
