Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles fall at West Virginia Tech despite Moore’s career game

Beckley, WV: Alice Lloyd College junior guard Katie Jo Moore poured in 37 points, but it wasn't enough as her Lady Eagles dropped a close 81-76 decision to the homestanding West Virginia University Tech Golden Bears. The close matchup took place on February 10th.

In the opening period, WVT shot a blistering 58.8% from the floor to produce 23 points. Moore pumped in 8 for her squad, but the hosts would lead 23-18 after ten minutes of action.

In the second quarter, Moore would pump in 9 more points without a miss and see her teammate, senior guard Hannah Kash, add 6 of her own. The two teams traded buckets, to the tune of 21 points apiece, and this enabled Tech to go into intermission nursing a 44-39 lead.

In the third period, Moore delivered a big 12-spot, which allowed her crew to take the period with 23 points. However, WV Tech saw center Alva Hedrich sink four buckets to help keep the Mountaineer team on top. ALC would only trail 64-62 entering the final period of play.

In the last stanza, the guests would hope to make a nice comeback as Moore and fellow senior, forward Madison Ward, combined for 14 points. Unfortunately, the Beckley team kept feeding the ball inside to Hedrich, and the big center delivered every time ALC got within striking distance. Four late free throws then ensured the Bears would hold on for the win.

For Alice Lloyd (10-14; 5-9 RSC) Moore was on fire all game long. She swished 14-22 field goals and a perfect 7-7 free throws for her career-high 37 points. She also snared 7 rebounds, handed off 3 assists and nabbed 1 steal.

Kash finished with 15 points, 7 assists, and 2 steals, while senior forward Madison Thompson chipped in with 8 points, 13 big rebounds, and 3 blocks.

The Eastern Kentucky team finished shooting 40.5% (30-74) from the field, 21.1% (4-19) from deep, and 92.3% (12-13) from the charity line, while adding 40 rebounds, 14 assists, 4 blocks and 4 steals.

For WV Tech (5-18; 2-11 RSC) they were led on the day by Hedrich with 26 points. Her squad finished shooting 51.7% (30-58) from the field and 31.3% (5-16) from long range. They connected on 61.5% (16-26) from the foul line, and also added 36 rebounds, 19 assists, and 9 steals.

The Lady Eagles return home on Tuesday, February 13th when they host the conference's only unbeaten squad, the NAIA's #18 squad, Rio Grande University. The big RSC showdown tips off at 5:30 pm. That will be followed by the men's contest at 7:30 pm.
