Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles fall to Midway University in River States Conference Tournament, 73-68

Midway, KY: On February 26th, the Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles journeyed to central Kentucky to face the Midway University Lady Eagles in the first round of the River States Conference Tournament. The visiting Eagles put up a good trussell before dropping a close 73-68 decision.

In the opening stanza, the hosts jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead at 7:56, only to see Alice Lloyd junior guard Katie Jo Moore and senior forward Madison Thompson combine for a dozen points to trim the deficit. A late flurry from the host squad would give them a 20-15 lead at periods end.

In the second quarter, the visiting Eagles saw senior guard Hannah Kash heat up to the tune of 11 points to lead her squad on a nice run. After twenty minutes, Alice Lloyd would take the period 24-13 and pull out to a 39-33 cushion.

In the third stanza, ALC saw Kash and Moore split 10 points between them. Unfortunately, Midway rolled off a 23-17 advantage and knotted the score 56-56 heading into the ten minutes of play.

In the crucial final quarter, ALC turned ice cold, as they only managed two charity tosses in the first five minutes. However, they remained close because of their stingy defense. Eventually, when freshman forward Jamie Cowan added three more free throws to the cause, the Pippa Passes posse only trailed 63-61 with 3:54 remaining in the game.

At this important juncture, MU found guard Kassidy Daughtery, and she sank back-to-back trifectas to give her squad just enough separation to propel them to victory.

For ALC (11-17), Moore led all scorers with 22 points on 9-14 shooting. She added 4 rebounds and 2 steals. She was followed by Kash with 16 points, 4 assists and 5 steals. Thompson also chipped in with 10 points, 9 caroms, and 3 blocks, while Cowan snagged 8 boards.

The Eastern Kentucky team finished shooting 39.3% (22-56) from the field and 29.4% (5-17) from long range. They also sank 73.1% (19-26) from the foul line while adding 41 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 blocks and 10 steals.

For MU (13-16) Daughtery paved the way with 18 points. Her squad finished shooting 37.3% (25-67) from the field, 22.7% (5-23) from behind the arc and 66.7% (18-27) from the charity stripe. They also added 43 rebounds, 11 assists, 2 blocks and 11 steals.

The Lady Eagles are off until March 7th, when they will travel to Wilmore University to play the Asbury Eagles in the NCCAA Mideast Regional Tournament.
