Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles Open 2024-25 Basketball season, face Carolina University
Pippa Passes, KY: On Saturday, October 26th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles began the 2024-25 roundball season by hosting the Carolina University (NC) Lady Bruins. CU combined a good start with frigid shooting from the home team, to take the 83-47 victory.
The same two clubs met last year in the semi-final round of the NCCAA National Tournament, with the Bruins eventually coming out on top. This year, they would bring an experienced squad to Caney Creek to face the youthful Eagles, who had lost four veteran players.
In the opening period, the visitors held a slight 14-10 lead before closing on a 9-3 run to pull ahead 23-13 after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, Carolina kept up the pace as the Kentucky ladies had trouble finding the bottom of the basket. A 23-11 quarter would propel CU to a 46-24 lead at intermission.
In the third period, Lady Eagle freshman guard Bailey Stewart would help her squad produce a 16-point quarter. Unfortunately, paced by guard Shantazia Gordon, Carolina would counter with 22 more points, and maintain a 68-40 advantage entering the final quarter of play.
In the final period, any hopes the Pippa Passes posse had of slicing into the deficit were hindered by ice-cold shooting. The Bruins took the stanza 15-7, and left the Perry Campus Center with the big road victory.
For Alice Lloyd (0-1), Stewart was the only player to reach double figures, sinking half of her ten attempts to finish with 11 points. Fellow freshman, forward Kaison Ward, finished 4-6 from the floor for 9 points.
Ward and freshman guard Ashtyn Barrett led the club with 6 rebounds apiece while sophomore guard Kennedy Harville handed off 3 assists. Sophomore guard Abby Maggard had a pair of blocks while freshman guard Elivia Moore delivered 3 steals.
The Caney Club finished shooting just 26.1% (18-69) from the field and 17.1% (6-35) from long range. They connected on 50% (5-10) from the foul line while adding 40 rebounds, 12 assists, 5 blocks and 11 steals.
Gordon paced CU (1-0) with 16 points. Her squad finished shooting 41.8% (33-79) from the field, 36.4% (8-22) from behind the arc, and 64.3% (9-14) from the charity stripe. They also added 62 big rebounds, 20 assists, 2 blocks and 13 steals.
The Lady Eagles look to get on the winning track when they travel to Milligan College on October 29th to face the Buffaloes. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
