Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles falter in final quarter, fall to Saint Mary-of-the Woods, 72-54

Pippa Passes , KY:  The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles hung tough through three periods, but the final ten minutes belonged to Saint Mary -of-the Woods College (IN), as the Hoosier club pulled out a 72-54 victory over the Bluegrass ladies. The River States Conference matchup took place at the Perry Center and  "Coach J" Court on Saturday, January 25th.

In the opening period, ALC sophomore forward Jamie Cowan matched buckets with SMWC guard Brooklynn Jones, as each player pumped in 7 points. Saint Mary would hold a slim 14-12 lead after ten minutes of play.

In the second quarter, Caney Creek freshman forward Kaison Ward delivered 7 points of her own to aid her crew in capturing the segment, 16-15. The visitors would head into intermission clinging to a slight 29-28 advantage.

In the third period,  ALC's freshman guard Bailey Stewart got in on the action as she knocked down 8 points of her own to keep her team close. Despite that, the Pomeroys would take the stanza, 23-19 and extend their advantage to 5 (52-47) heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth stanza, Alice Lloyd suddenly went ice cold. Cowan would drain 3-5 shots and her lone free throw for 7 more points, but unfortunately, the rest of the squad would draw a blank as a lid seemed to appear on the hoop. Saint Mary hit enough shots, plus 9-10 free throws, to pull away for the critical win.

For ALC (8-11; 3-5 RSC), three players would hit double-digits. They were led by Cowan, who did everything she could to inspire her team. She registered her third-consecutive double-double by hitting 5-8 field goals and  6-7 free throws to finish with 17 points. She also hauled down 13 rebounds, and grabbed two steals.

Stewart (5-10 FG) delivered 14 points and added 5 boards while Ward chipped in with 11 points and added 5 more rebounds. Additionally, junior guard Aziah Campbell  led the way with 4 assists while freshman guard Elivia Moore also nabbed 2 steals.

The Pippa Passes club finished shooting 32.3% (20-63) from the field and 23.5% (4-17) from long range. They connected on 90.9% (10-11) from the foul line while adding 37 rebounds, 12 assists, 2 blocks, and 7 steals.

Jones paced the Pomeroys (11-8; 4-4 RSC) with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Her squad finished shooting 37.3% (32-59) from the field, 30% (6-20) from behind the arc, and 78.6% (22-28) from the charity stripe. They also added 44 rebounds, 14 assists, 5 blocks and 11 steals.

The Lady Eagles return to action on Thursday, January 30th as they travel to Oakland City (IN) to battle the Mighty Oaks. Tipoff is set for 8:30 pm EST.
