Cold shooting in middle periods proves costly, Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles drop decision at Brescia University
Owensboro, KY: The Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles concluded their road trip as they journeyed to Owensboro to battle the solid Brescia University Lady Bearcats on February 1st. The Caney Creek club got out to a great start, but the two middle periods would prove disastrous as they dropped an 86-58 decision.
In the first period, ALC came out of the gate strong. Behind 7 points from sophomore forward Jamie Cowan and red-hot team accuracy, the Eastern Kentucky crew would play well and lead 21-15 after ten minutes of action. Unfortunately, the momentum was getting ready to change.
In the second quarter, the tables would turn as the visitors went ice-cold while the Bearcats caught fire. A massive 27-10 advantage for the hosts would send them into the dressing room leading 42-31.
In the third period, the Caney team saw Brescia sink 60% of their shots and pump in 26 more points. This would enable them to extend their advantage to 68-47 entering the final ten minutes of play.
In the final stanza, any hope of a comeback was dashed by the continued shooting woes of ALC. Although the squad continued to battle, the Caney Creek crew was unable to overcome the difference before time expired.
For ALC (8-13; 3-7 RSC), no member of the squad reached double figures. Cowan, sophomore guard Kennedy Harvel, and freshman guard Bailey Stewart all delivered 9 points.
Additionally, Cowan led the squad with 8 rebounds, and junior guard Aziah Campbell led the team with 2 assists. Stewart and Harvel, along with the freshman duo of guards Elivia Moore and Ashtyn Barrett, all nabbed 2 steals.
The Caney Club finished shooting 38.6% (22-57) from the field, 30.8% (4-13) from long range, and 58.8% (10-17) from the foul line while adding 28 rebounds, 6 assists, 11 steals, and 2 blocks.
Caroline Lucas led the Bearcats (14-6; 6-4 RSC) with 17 points. Her squad finished shooting 48.2% (27-58) from the field, 39.1% (9-23) from behind the arc and 82.1% (23-28) from the charity stripe. They also added 42 rebounds, 18 assists, and 7 steals.
The Lady Eagles return home on Tuesday, February 4th, for an important matchup in RSC play with the Indiana University East Red Wolves. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
