Pittsburgh, PA: On September 23rd -24th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles volleyball team journeyed to Pittsburgh for two tough River States Conference matchups. On Friday, they faced the Carlow University Celtics, and on Saturday, they faced the Point Park University Pioneers. The Pennsylvania schools were victorious both days.
Facing the solid Celtics (8-1) in Game 1, ALC came out with a focused effort. The set was tight throughout, and the hosts were clinging to a 21-19 lead late. Unfortunately, an Eagle error and 3 Carlow kills permitted the Pittsburg team to pull out the opener, 25-22.
In Game 2, the action was intense as the clubs battled to an 11-11 tie. Then, the tide turned as the home squad reeled off 7 unanswered points to leap ahead 18-11. The Celtics would then close out things from there, 25-14.
In Game 3, the squads battled evenly once more, before CU slipped ahead 19-16, and seemed on the verge of a sweep. Fortunately, it was ALC's turn to rally.
The visitors scored 5 consecutive points to grab the lead (21-19) and force a timeout. After play resumed, the Pippa Passes club refused to back down, and they promptly closed the set with 3 kills to win, 25-22.
In Game 4, the evenly-matched squads battled intently, knowing the importance of this game. Finally, clinging to a 17-15 cushion, Carlow unleashed 4-straight kills and used that burst to finally subdue the Kentucky girls, 25-18.
On the day, Caroline Parsons led ALC (3-4) with 18 assists, while Kyleah Ward had 11 kills. Jenni Droke led everyone with 40 big digs. However, the club only recorded 2 blocks and 2 aces.
September 24th
ALC went straight from the frying pan into the fryer as they faced the formidable Lady Pioneers (9-3) the very next day.
In Game 1, PPU came out and exploded to a 10-point lead (15-5). They withstood a short rally from the Lady Eagles before icing the set, 25-14.
In Game 2, the hosts exploded out of the gate on a 14-2 blitz and cruised on to the 25-10 win.
In Game 3, the Caney Creek crew battled and only trailed 13-8. Unfortunately, the Pioneers rolled out a 10-3 run that slammed the door shut on the 25-13 win.
On the day, Caroline Parsons and Kristin Issac led ALC (3-5) with 4 assists each. Adreonna Schutz had 7 kills while Jenni Droke led in digs (9). Kyleah Ward contributed 3 blocks, and Issac had the lone ace.
The Lady Eagles return home for conference play on Tuesday, September 27th, when they face Rio Grande University at 7:00 pm. They then travel to Beckley (WV) Friday the 30th to face Appalachian Bible College and West Virginia Tech University in a doubleheader at 3:30-7:00 pm.
