
Alice Lloyd Eagles Volleyball Splits Over Weekend, Earn Big Conference Victory
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles volleyball team hosted two River States Conference opponents over the weekend. On Friday, October 21st they faced the Carlow Celtics (9-11; 1-10 RSC). One day later, they welcomed the league's top team, the Point Park University Pioneers. After the final spike had taken place, the Lady Eagles would earn a split, which included their first conference win of the season.
ALC- 3; Carlow-0
Against the Celtics in set 1, the visitors jumped out to a 9-4 lead before ALC responded with a run of their own to knot things at 16-16. From that juncture, the Pippa Passes posse would smash 4 consecutive kills to seize momentum (20-16), and use that to pull out to the 25-19 win.
In set 2, the hosts exploded out of the gate on a 13-4 blitz. They would see Carlow get within four (13-9) but promptly roll out a nice 10-3 spurt to pull away once more. ALC would cruise on to the 25-17 win and take a two-game lead,
In set 3, the Caney Creek crew battled furiously, seeking the sweep. Leading 13-7, the Lady Eagles saw the Pennsylvania club slowly chip away at the deficit, and finally tie the score at 24 all. Happily, for the home fans, Brooklyn Cheek delivered a big kill to put the Pass ahead (25-24), and then CU committed an attack error to chalk the match up in the victory column (26-24) for the white and blue.
For the match, Kylie Ward and Adreonna Schutz both had 6 kills, while Caroline Parsons and Kristin Isaac led ALC with 15 and 12 assists. In addition, Jenni Droke led with 17 digs, Elizabeth Mcintosh contributed 1.5 blocks, and Parsons smacked 4 aces.
October 22nd
ALC - 0; Point Park - 3
ALC would face the conference-leading Lady Pioneers (18-5; 12-0 RSC) the very next day and put up a good effort.
In set 1, ALC came out focused and kept the match tied early. However, trailing 13-10, they saw PPU explode with a 12-3 run to close the contest and take the game, 25-13.
In set 2, the hosts led early, and only trailed 9-7 before a quick run by the Pioneers pushed the lead out to 15-8. From that point, PPU rolled off an impressive blitz, to take the game going away, 25-12.
In set 3, the Caney Creek crew battled, determined not to go down quietly. In an excellently played game that was nip-and-tuck throughout, the home fans saw the Caney girls trade points with the big city club until the score read 20-20.
To their credit, the Pennsylvania squad showed why they are the team to beat this year in the RSC as they came up with the big plays in the clutch to seal the match finally, 25-20.
On the day, Kristin Isaac led ALC with 9 assists. Kyleah Ward delivered 6 kills, while Caroline Parsons and Jenni Droke led in digs, with 9 and 8, respectively. Ward and Brooklyn Cheek contributed 1 block each, while Adreonna Schutz had 2 aces.
The Lady Eagles (7-14; 1-11RSC) return home for two conference games next weekend. On Friday, October 28th, they face Brescia University at 7:00 pm. They then take the court the very next day at high noon, to battle Oakland City University.
